Please help me out to count number of lines in binary file. It gives some wrong(less) using wc -l. Is there any other way to count lines of binary file.

Hello, I need help in appending the line number of each line to the file and also to get the total number of lines. Can somebody please help me.

FILE_LINE_COUNT=`wc -l $INT_IN/$RAW_FILE_NAME`
if i do an echo on FILE_LINE_COUNT then i get
241 /home/data/testfile.txt

I have created one shell script in which it will count number of "~" tilda charactors from each line of the file.But the problem is that i need to count each line count individually, that means. if line one contains 14 "~"s and line two contains 15 "~"s then it should give an error msg.each... I have been working on Awk/sed one liner which counts the number of occurrences of '|' in pipe separated lines of file and delete the line from files if count exceeds "17".

split string ?splitChars?

Returns a list created by splitting string at each character that is in the splitChars argument. Each element of the result list will con-
sist of the characters from string that lie between instances of the characters in splitChars. Empty list elements will be generated if
string contains adjacent characters in splitChars, or if the first or last character of string is in splitChars. If splitChars is an empty
string then each character of string becomes a separate element of the result list. SplitChars defaults to the standard white-space char-
acters.
EXAMPLES
Divide up a USENET group name into its hierarchical components:
split "comp.lang.tcl.announce" .
-> comp lang tcl announce
See how the split command splits on every character in splitChars, which can result in information loss if you are not careful:
split "alpha beta gamma" "temp"
-> al {ha b} {} {a ga} {} a
Extract the list words from a string that is not a well-formed list:
split "Example with {unbalanced brace character"
