If you're only goal is to grab data, have you considered booting up with a live CD such as Knoppix (Knoppix Linux Boot CD, Download Disk and Documents, Discuss, Get Help)? You mentioned being familiar with Ubuntu. They also provide a live CD (Try Ubuntu before you install it | Ubuntu). Either should allow access to the drive(s) and their data providing they're not physically damaged.

ok so I just installed fedora core 6 on my dell inspiron 700m and I go to boot into linux and I get this error. Has anyone seen this before? what-patch [options] DESCRIPTION
what-patch examines the debian/rules file to determine which patch system the Debian package is using. what-patch should be run from the root directory of the Debian source package. OPTIONS
