The fastest way is by "parameter expansion". See the "#", "%", "##" and "%%" operators in the man page for bash, like in:

var="12345:12345"
echo ${var%%:*}
echo ${var##*:}

       NNN  the character whose ASCII code is NNN (octal)

       \     backslash

       a     alert (BEL)

            backspace
