Directing cat or grep command in variable

I would doubt on the multiple lines that cat file and grep something file would return 
Or non-existence of the file in case of cat and nothing found in case of grep
Or non-existence of the file in case of cat and nothing found in case of grep

I am trying to cat a file and then grep that file for a number. I can do it fine on other files but this particular file will not do anything. So I sorted my file as I was supposed to:
sort -n -r -k 2 -k 1 file1 | uniq > file2
and when I wrote
> cat file2
in the command line, I got what I was expecting, but in the script itself

I am not sure if using cat -n is the most efficient way to split a file into multiple files, one file per line in the source file.
I thought using cat -n would make it easy to process the file because it produces an output that numbers each line that I could then grep for with the regex "^ *$i".... (3 Replies)

ZGREP(1) General Commands Manual ZGREP(1) NAME
zgrep - search possibly compressed files for a regular expression SYNOPSIS
zgrep [ grep_options ] [ -e ] pattern filename... DESCRIPTION
Zgrep invokes grep on compressed or gzipped files. These grep options will cause zgrep to terminate with an error code: (-[drRzZ]|--di*|--exc*|--inc*|--rec*|--nu*). All other options specified are passed directly to grep. If no file is specified, then the standard input is decompressed if necessary and fed to grep. Otherwise the given files are uncompressed if necessary and fed to grep. If the GREP environment variable is set, zgrep uses it as the grep program to be invoked. EXIT CODE
