2nd argument of grep is a file name.
Either
Code:
printf "%s\n" "$rec" | grep -q "INFO"

or replace it by a case statement
Code:
case $rec in
 *INFO*) echo "$rec" | /usr/bin/mailx -s "Error `date`" maddy@mycompany.com
 ;;
esac
