Data Protecting variable indicator ($) from expansion

Hello,

I use a lot this command to edit a bunch of files at once
Code:
find . -name filename" | xargs -ifoo sh -c 'echo foo ; sed "s/pattern1/pattern2/" foo > ./tmp ; mv -f ./tmp foo'

I'm trying to put a function on my .bashrc file.
Code:
function loopSed()
{
local filename=$1
local pattern1=$2
local pattern2=$3
find . -name "$filename" | xargs -ifoo sh -c 'echo foo ; sed "s/$pattern1/$pattern2/" foo > ./tmp ; mv -f ./tmp foo'
}

But I get this error
Code:
sed: -e expression #1, char 0: no previous regular expression

And all the files are replaced by empty files. I would like to substitute only the files where the pattern search actually did something, and if it's possible, keeping the original file permissions.

Thanks,
