Questions about a "wise" backup
Hello forum, this is my first post here and i have some questions:
Some info about what kind of back up i want to make:
I would like to backup /home/lambda/projects and some config files in /home and /etc and a whole hard disc(music,photos,videos etc).
Since i want it to run it every Monday, i understand i must use cron, but i also want if for any reason on Monday 01:00 :
a)Hard disk(the one i want to take back up of) is not mounted, inform me with mail(1) so that i can mount it.
b)If computer is turned off, on next boot inform me with mail(1) that i have not made a backup that Monday.(by reading a log file of successful backups on boot)
c)If for any reason the back up was interrupted(reboot, electricity blackout), inform me again with mail(1).
d)If the backup was successful write to a log file that day-month-year-time that back up was successful and inform me with mail(1).
Since i also want to backup config files, this means that the filename is the same, but the content of the file might change.Or for example i might add some new photos to a file so the back up should be updated with the new photos. Some kind of synchronization that is.
1) Which are the best practices/tools for such backups(if there's a book/link for example)?
2) In terms of time, except for the size of the files, which other parameters matter for the duration of the backup?

I want to sort file names within a folder
I used the following shell script for sorting
ls|grep ".wav"|sort -t"_" -k3,4 -n -k4,2 -n
The result is as below, and the problem is _plr# and _r# (# represents numbers) is not well sorted.
m2_rec_plr0_r10.wav

FILETRAQ(8) System Manager's Manual FILETRAQ(8) NAME
filetraq - keep track of changes in config files. SYNOPSIS
filetraq --help filetraq [filelist] [backupdir] DESCRIPTION
This manual page documents briefly the filetraq command. This manual page was written for the Debian GNU/Linux distribution because the original program does not have a manual page. FileTraq is a shell script that reads a list of files to watch, runs diff against each file and its backup, and reports any discrepancies, along with keeping a dated backup of the original. It's designed to be run as a cron job. OPTIONS
This command has two possible invocations, one with one option: --help Show summary of options and the default values of the config file and the backup directory. and other with no options, a config file or a config file and the backupdir. The debian version has been modified to read the /etc/default/filetraq configuration file, that lets the administrator change the default values of the config file ( file ), the backup directory ( backupdir ), the diff options used to print the filetraq output ( diffopts , e.g. -p -C 1 or -u ) and the diff order ( difforder , either newold (FileTraq default) or oldnew (traditional Unix default)). SECURITY
FileTraq is not well tested or hardened. It runs as root, but all of its config files should only be accessible by root. No security holes are known at this time, but please be careful. BUGS
Right now, it doesn't take care of its backups very well. The dated backups will accumulate in the backups directory, bounded only by diskspace. It only handles text files, it isn't a Tripwire replacement for use with system binaries. FILES
