If you have results, in some static form, you can dynamically mount NFS connections as needed to acces those directories.

Is your "backbone" 1GB or 10GB? If you can create a subnet for the fast NICs and each UNIX box has a 10GB NIC, this is very acceptable - what we do now. We create a job's data, notify the other box, it NFS mounts the dataset readonly, and away we go.

There is another issue to consider. Even though you may get great throughput, some boxes have issues. Solaris with older Qlogix cards takes a hit on interrupts. Because the cpu does a lot of work for the NIC.

All of this is a case of limiting factors, something you see in Science a lot. When you raise the bar on one limit (cpu) then some other resource becomes limiting (I/O in this case or interrupt stack). Since it is not economically feasible to build highways to completely handle rush hour traffic, so it is with computers. As long as it does not hurt production, and you get more processing power, you are okay. You did pay for the hadware, so use it.

NAME

       nfsconfig  -  Launches  the  SysMan  Menu  at the Network File System Configuration (NFS) level, where you can configure a system as an NFS
       server or as an NFS client

SYNOPSIS

       /usr/sbin/nfsconfig

       /usr/sbin/sysman nfs

DESCRIPTION

       The NFS Configuration section of SysMan Menu is used by the System Administrator or the UNIX system manager  to	manage	NFS  configuration
       issues.

       It  allows  the	system	to be configured as an NFS server (to make its file systems available to remote machines), or as an NFS client (to
       mount remote file systems).

       Before using nfsconfig, be sure to configure Network Interfaces using the Network Configuration section of the SysMan menu.

       You can configure your system as an NFS Server, an NFS Client, or both.	However, if the Network Interfaces are down, the following daemons
       will not start: nfsd, pcnfsd, proplistd, mountd, and automountd.

       Use  nfsconfig  to do the following: Manage the configuration of the system as an NFS server.  You can only configure your system as an NFS
       server if the NFS Server option is built into the kernel.  Manage the configuration of the system as client-only system Specify	file  sys-
