Yes, it is possible to do what you want to do. Essentially, what you need to do is create a local repository containing the Centos 5.8 packages and upgrade your system using that repository.
Create a file /etc/yum.repos.d/file.repo which should have the contents as mentioned below:
When you do "yum list" you should be able to see the new repository. If so, then you can use "yum upgrade" to upgrade your system.

I would like to know the difference between YUM UPDATE and YUM UPGRADE. The man pages say upgrade is same as update with the obsolete option. And by default it says the obsolete option is turned on, which would make them equivalent. Does not say what obsolete does.

Im using CentOs 5.5 , i tried to change the host name to be for example my_server_1 , according to the web i changed the /etc/sysconf/network to look like this :
NETWORKING=yes
NETWORKING_IPV6=no
#HOSTNAME=localhost.localdomain
HOSTNAME=my_server_1
