Nope. An excerption of the GNU Awk User's Guide:

print items > output-file
This type of redirection prints the items into the output file named output-file. The file name output-file can be any expression. Its value is changed to a string and then used as a file name (see section 6. Expressions).

When this type of redirection is used, the output-file is erased before the first output is written to it. Subsequent writes to the same output-file do not erase output-file, but append to it. (This is different from how you use redirections in shell scripts.)

I need to split a file into n separate files of about the same size. The way the file will be split is at every nth row, starting with the first row, that row will be cut and copied to it's corresponding new file so that each file has unique records. NAME

       ppmtopgm - convert a portable pixmap into a portable graymap

SYNOPSIS

       ppmtopgm [ppmfile]

DESCRIPTION

       Reads  a  portable  pixmap  as  input.  Produces a portable graymap as output.  The output is a "black and white" rendering of the original
       image, as in a black and white photograph.  The quantization formula used is .299 r + .587 g + .114 b.

       Note that although there is a pgmtoppm program, it is not necessary for simple conversions from pgm to ppm , because any  ppm  program  can
       read  pgm  (and	pbm  ) files automatically.  pgmtoppm is for colorizing a pgm file.  Also, see ppmtorgb3 for a different way of converting
       color to gray.  And ppmdist generates a grayscale image from a color image, but in a way that makes it easy to differentiate  the  original
       colors, not necessarily a way that looks like a black and white photograph.
