This is a very basic start, i'm sure something much more elegant could be done with awk Smilie

Code:
#!/bin/bash

FILE="/tmp/file.txt"
COUNT=1

for i in `cat ${FILE}`
do
	if [ "$((${COUNT}%2))" -eq 1 ]
	then
		echo -n "${i}"
	else
		echo " ${i}"
	fi

	let COUNT=$COUNT+1
done
