No, I don't believe reinstalling the O/S is likely to fix it.
Obvious thoughts are:-
1. BIOS code fault, is there a manufacturer's BIOS update available.
2. Something wrong with BIOS battery, perhaps about to fail.
3. It's getting system time from a stuck time server (does it still happen if you unplug network cable?)
As you say, very strange.

one of our customer is facing an issue with jiffies wrap up.
on a 32 bit machine, the variable jiffies count upto 472 days.
the customer's server was up for 472 days ('uptime') and to reproduce

i can convert ticks to new lines using something like this:
tr '`' '\n' < filename
or
tr "\`" "\n" < filename
or vice versa
tr '\n' '`' < filename
or
tr "\n" "\`" < filename
however, this command seems to not work the same on every system. it works on ubuntu, and it works on redhat... (4 Replies)

NAME
pnpbios -- support for embedded devices on the motherboard
DESCRIPTION
The pnpbios driver enumerates embedded ISA devices on the motherboard whose BIOS supports ``Plug and Play BIOS Specification''. It assigns
ISA bus resources (interrupt line, DMA channel, I/O ports, and memory region) to each device and activates it.
If it cannot assign necessary resources to a device without causing conflict with other devices in the system, the device will not be acti-
vated and will be unavailable to programs.
CAVEATS
There is no explicit way to disable individual embedded devices. The pnpbios driver will find all devices reported by the ``Plug and Play
(PnP)'' BIOS and try to activate them all.
There is no way to explicitly assign particular resource to a device. The resource assignment is fully automatic and there is no provision
for manual override.
