Thanks for your suggestions. I actually know how to avoid the grep process in the output but was curious about the reason it turned up in the output at all.
The shell may actually create them all at the same time, effectively, i.e. all processes are created by the time ps[ and grep are exec-ed.

I'd never reccomend this code. -le is for integers, not strings, and certainly not for lines.
