Is there a standard way to make a shell script read a file, or list, and skip each line that contains # at the begining, or ignores the content starting after a # in line?
I'm looking to mimic the way commenting in a shell script normally works. This way I can comment my text files and lists my... (4 Replies)
From the below file I want to grep only the lines except the comment sections. But grep -v "#" is eliminating the last line because it has one # in between.
Any idea how can I ignore only the lines which have # at the begining (I mean comment lines) ?
Thanks a lot to all in advance

Hello Experts,
I have two files called "old" and "new". My old file contains 10 lines and my new file contains 10 + "n" lines.
The first field in both these files contain ID. I sort these two files on ID. I am interested in only the lines that are in the new file and not in old.

Hi all,
I'm looking for a way to generate an error when a command does not print an expected message. For example :
test.sh :
echo hi!test.exp :
exp_internal 1
spawn ./test.sh
expect {
"hi!" {puts "bingo!"}
"*" {puts "error!" ; exit 1}
}

Hello,
I have some code that works more or less. This is called by a make file to adjust some hard-coded definitions in the src code. locale::msgcat
Msgcat(3pm) User Contributed Perl Documentation Msgcat(3pm)NAME
Locale::Msgcat - Perl extension for blah blah blah
SYNOPSIS
use Locale::Msgcat;
$cat = new Locale::Msgcat;
$rc = $cat->catopen(name, oflag);
$msg = $cat->catgets(set_number, message_number, string);
$rc = $cat->catclose();
DESCRIPTION
The Locale::Msgcat module allows access to the message catalog functions which are available on some systems. A new Locale::Msgcat object
must first be created for each catalog which has to be open at a given time.
The catopen operation opens the catalog whose name is given as argument. The oflag can be either 0 or NL_CAT_LOCALE (usually 1) which is
the recommended value.
The catgets message retrieves message_number for the set_number message set, and if not found returns string.
The catclose function should be used when access to a catalog is not needed anymore.
EXAMPLES
use Locale::Msgcat;
$cat = new Locale::Msgcat;
unless ($cat->catopen("whois.cat", 1)) {
print STDERR "Can't open whois catalog.
";
exit(1);
}
printf "First message, first set : %s
", $cat->catgets(1, 1, "not found");
unless ($cat->catclose()) {
print STDERR "Can't close whois catalog.
";
exit(1);
}
The above example would print the first message from the first message set found in the whois catalog, or if not found it would print "not
found".
