Avidemux does a very good job of splitting AVI's. These are the options I used.

Video: Copy
Audio: MP3
Format AVI
Use A and B to set beginning and end.
Do not unpack AVI's. The video will get very laggy if you do that.

"SDL::Video" adds support for MPEG video to your SDL Perl application. Videos are objects bound to surfaces, whose playback is controled through the object's interface.
