Hi,
The directory is in the format ABC.20120402.IP
The file would be for example, XYZ12346.ERROR and I'm renaming this to XYZ123456
so what I'd normally do is just go into the folder then rename the file to have no extension.
e.g.
mv XYZ12346.ERROR XYZ12346
as the folder name would be different everyday I'm trying to do something like: -
mv /*.IP/*.ERRROR *. -- *.IP would be the folder and *.ERROR is any file within the folder that has the .ERROR extension.
Any pointers or where I should be looking would be a great help.

I splited a file into parts, then i wrote a script to convert the format of the file names to this: part1.dat part2.dat
but I wonder why part.dat is also created knowing that the k variable starts from 1
