Lost Root Password on VXVM Encapsulated Root Disk
Hi All
Hope it's okay to post on this sub-forum, couldn't find a better place
I've got a 480R running solaris 8 with veritas volume manager managing all filesystems, including an encapsulated root disk (I believe the root disk is encapsulated as one of the root mirror disks has an entry under /etc/vx/reconfig.d/disk.d/c1t0d0). The root password has been lost and I need to reset it. I've found what looks like a decent document online that suggests that I need to unencapsulate the root disk prior to changing the shadow entry. Seems risky work for a simple change - i'm hoping there may be a shortcut but heyho otherwise... I'm probably being over cautious
As the disk is encapsulated, can I just remove one of the disks while the system is live (effectively splitting the mirror), then boot from CD, mount the root FS, edit the shadow directly, boot again and just replace the removed disk? Any idea if the FS would be marked as 'dirty' by vxvm if I did this and not be bootable?
Assuming my finger in the air solution above won't work. Any idea if the document will be okay to run with?

I have a Sparc system with encapsulated disks.
Because of disk errors I had to replace rootdisk,
I did it with
vxdiskadm 4)
replacement, vxdctl disable/enable,
vxdiskadm 5)
After it it the system boot failed, dropped back to the ok> prompt, message was:

NBDST(8) BSD System Manager's Manual NBDST(8) NAME
nbdst -- NetBoot deferred shadow tool SYNOPSIS
nbdst [-recycle | -preallocate size] devnode shadowfile DESCRIPTION
nbdst is used during NetBoot to associate a shadow file with the disk image being used as the root device. After the shadow file is attached, subsequent writes to the root device will be redirected to the shadow file, which normally resides on local storage. nbdst is invoked by /etc/rc.netboot ARGUMENTS
The following arguments must be specified: devnode The device node of the root device, in the form "disk0" shadowfile Path to a shadow file which will be created and associated with the NetBoot root device OPTIONS
-recycle If a shadow file already exists, reset it and use it again. Otherwise, information written to an existing shadow file will reap- pear. Reusing a previous shadow file without resetting it requires that the shadow file be created with the same base image. -preallocate size Set the shadow file to the given size up front. This forces a reset of the shadow file (like -recycle). NOTE
