How i can put the result of a command inside a bash variable?

How i can put the result of a command inside a bash variable?
Code:
#!/bin/bash #... for i in `ls -c1 /usr/share/applications` do name="cat $i | grep ^Name= | cut -d = -f2" echo $name #... done
Quote:
cat arandr.desktop | grep ^Name= | cut -d = -f2
...
...
Ideally i would like obtain that information using only bash ... or bash+sed or bash+awk but i don't known if is possible so, for the moment, i used bash+grep+cut.
The final project will be an automatic menu generator for pekwm and, i hope, even for icewm.
If is possible i would like obtain that information using only the language that i specify above because i don't want use big languages (i means big package as perl, python, etc).
The final stage will be a test even on openbsd.
Note:
This is the second day that i'm broken my head on the wall.

Hi,
I am trying to do the following thing
var='date'
$var
Above command substitutes date for and in turn runs the date command and i am getting the todays date value.

Hi all,
Is there a simple way to read a command output as a variable? I've running a batch file to do:
attrib.exe * | find /c /v "" >filecount.txt
but rather than write it to the txt file I'd like to read the total in as a variable to pass to the rest of the bat file...

This should be extremely simple and someone will probably answer it in .5 seconds. I need to know what:
VARIABLE=${0##*/}
does? I do not have a shell handy to just try it in. I am reading through some scripts and need to understand this line. Any help is appreciated.

I can only get all files with .cmd extension. what i need to get are all the files inside the specific folder

I have the following script used, i am new to shell scripting. tryign to understand.
in the put $BASE_FOLDER/$base_name holds which path.
What does it mean by $1
second path in put command is it constructing this path: /user/hive/warehouse/stage.db/$1
what is $1 holding in above path.

hello, i am facing some issue. I am using a simple bash script that via sshpass put a command into router. Now, problem is that i have a file and commands into it.

dpkg-www - program to remotely open a WWW Debian package browser SYNOPSIS
dpkg-www [-s|--stdout] [-h|--host host] [query] DESCRIPTION
dpkg-www is used to remotely control a WEB browser and open a dpkg URL on the local host from an interactive shell or script. If the command is invoked while running under X-window the script will try to find an installed X browser to open the specified URL. If not running under X it will try to use a text browser instead. If Netscape is found and a Netscape instance is already running it will be asked to open the dpkg URL on localhost with the optional query supplied on the command line. If there is no browser running, it will start automatically a new one. The functionality provided by this program is identical to running a web browser with the -remote openURL(http://localhost/cgi-bin/dpkg) argument or opening the same URL from within the browser. dpkg-www-installer is an helper application which can configured in the WWW browser for web installation. It should never be invoked directly by the user. OPTIONS
-s, --stdout Redirect output to stdout. Requires one of the text browsers (lynx, lynx-ssl or links) installed. -h, --host host Send the query to a remote host, where dpkg-www must be installed. query Specifies an optional package name, an absolute pathname or a query argument which is passed to the dpkg cgi-bin. See dpkg-www(8) for more information about the use of the cgi. FILES
/etc/dpkg-www.conf ~/.dpkg-www Configuration files for dpkg-www. It is not necessary for these files to exist, there are sensible defaults for everything, but you can specify your preferred www browser with the DPKG_WWW_BROWSER variable, for example: DPKG_WWW_BROWSER=mozilla EXAMPLES
dpkg-www This would open a dpkg URL on localhost listing all the installed packages. dpkg-www bash This would open a dpkg URL asking info on the bash package. dpkg-www -h pisolo bash This would open a dpkg URL asking info on the bash package on host pisolo. dpkg-www 'dpkg*' This would open a dpkg URL listing all packages matching dpkg*. dpkg-www /bin/bash This would open a dpkg URL asking info on the package(s) owning the file /bin/bash . dpkg-www depends=svgalib This would open a dpkg URL listing all packages depending on svgalib. dpkg-www --stdout depends=awk | grep ^ii This would list on stdout all packages depending on awk and grep all lines of installed packages.
