I am trying to use sed with substitute to replace a section of text in a fileA.
Question 1:
If I want to want replace the "search" string with "replace" string inside fileA. I understand that I can use
Code:
sed 's/search/replace' < fileA >fileB
I also tried to do <fileA >fileA, but it doesn't work. Why is that? I don't want an extra file, fileB.
Question 2:
My main question. Inside the comand sed 's/search/replace' < fileA >fileB, the string "search" and "replaced" are actually inside fileC and fileD. How do I write the command? Thanks!

Okay, title is kind of confusion, but basically, I have a lot of scripts on a server that I need to replace a ps command, however, the new ps command I'm trying to replace the current one with pipes to sed at one point. So now I am attempting to create another script that replaces that line.

I'm working with this command which I'm having trouble understanding it:
sed -e '1,$ s/SUB/N/g' < $1 > file.txt
Where SUB stand for an special character with code in ASCII is 0x1A, notepad read it as a right arrow.

SYNOPSIS

int ausearch_add_expression(auparse_state_t *au, const char *expression, char **error, ausearch_rule_t how);
DESCRIPTION
ausearch_add_item adds an expression to the current audit search expression. The search conditions can then be used to scan logs, files,
or buffers for something of interest. The expression parameter contains an expression, as specified in ausearch-expression(5).
The how parameter determines how this search expression will affect the existing search expression, if one is already defined. The possi-
ble values are:
AUSEARCH_RULE_CLEAR
Clear the current search expression, if any, and use only this search expression.
AUSEARCH_RULE_OR
If a search expression E is already configured, replace it by (E || this_search_expression).
AUSEARCH_RULE_AND
If a search expression E is already configured, replace it by (E && this_search_expression).
RETURN VALUE
If successful, ausearch_add_expression returns 0. Otherwise, it returns -1, sets errno and it may set *error to an error message; the
caller must free the error message using free(3). If an error message is not available or can not be allocated, *error is set to NULL.
