It's probably eating the backslash since perl double-quotes evaluate those. You may need to escape the escaping. You'll probably also need to escape those $ in your awk, since perl evaluates those into variables, and escape the double-quotes i the awk statement, so perl won't mistake them for its own.
I remember writing Perl like that: Line after line after line of nothing but system() and backticks [because I wanted to avoid using the shell]. Eventually I noticed they were starting entire bourne shells just to parse one "mv a b" and was horrified -- by avoiding the shell I'd actually used eight of them consecutively
Returning much later, I rewrote some of these "perl" scripts as shell, making them much smaller, simpler, and saner.

Is ssh configured to login without a password, there? You'll probably need to tell it what key files to use with ssh -i /path/to/key. You'll need to give the key the right permissions so the webserver can read it, too.

You may also find it useful to redirect standard error into standard output so you can see error messages from shell programs instead of them all being swallowed by the web server. Unfortunately, while trivial in a shell exec 2>&1, that's extremely difficult in perl.

SYNOPSIS
photon [OPTIONS] [PATH]
DESCRIPTION
Photon generates clean, yet configurable, static HTML photo galleries. All of the work is done from the command line, and the resulting
output can easily be configured by changing the template files found in /usr/share/photon/templates.
To create a new template (skin), first create a new directory:
mkdir -p ${HOME}/.photon/templates/my_theme/
Then copy the contents of /usr/share/photon/templates/photonv1/ to this new directory. Photon only needs three files to build pages:
index.html
used to display the content of a folder
image.html
used to display the page for an image
movie.html
used to display the page for a movie
If a file is missing, then photon will throw an error and will not run.
HOW TO BUILD A GALLERY
Quick start
$ photon -o myoutputdir /photos
Use the gimp plugin
$ photon --resize-plugin=gimp -v -o myoutputdir /photos
Change the size for all images and the thumbnail and keep the original photo
$ photon --sizelist=0,1600x1200,800x600 --thumbsize=320x240 -o myoutputdir /photos
