The IFS is reset for safety. Granted those are corner cases,
but consider the following:
Leading and trailing IFS characters are stripped when shell word/field splitting is performed - note that the trailing space is missing in the output.
So if you leave IFS to its default value the result would be:
And it's always possible that you're running the script in an environment with a modified (non-default) IFS settings.

I want to create a temp file which is named based on a search string. The search string may contain spaces or characters that aren't supposed to be used in filenames so I want to strip those out.
My thought was to use 'tr' with but the result is the opposite of what I want:

Usage: ndselect -h|--help|-v|--version or

Print to standard output a subset of lines and fields from a given file.
The argument after the options is the name of the file to read from. The complete path of the file should be given, a directory name is
not accepted. If no input file is specified, the program reads from the standard input.
Exit status: 0 in case of normal termination, -1 (255) in case of error
-b, --beginning, --start=N
Set to N the number of the first line to print (The default behavior is to start with line number 1)
-e, --end=N
