You have to export the variable PATH, not the program name to make the shell find it. The current PATH has to be expanded by the path where the program you want to execute is placed like assuming your prog is placed in /home/mydir:

export PATH=$PATH:/home/mydir

You can add this to your .profile or another script that will be executed by your shell at the start of your session like for example .bashrc, .kshrc, ....
If this line is already there somewhere (most probably), you can just alter it and add your directory with a colon as separator.
