Bash Script Help...search then read from file: change text and pipe back...
Hello,
I am trying to make a bash script that can pull data from a file and then change one part of said data.
I want to search by username and pull the full line. That way there is a way to replace just one part of that line then return it back to the file.
My Data is stored like:
There are 120 lines like that. So lets say I want to Search for John Smith. Return that line and just change the text between the | 's at DATA3 then write it back to the original file.
There could be more then one user using this script at once (I kinda got it to work saving to a file then piping out... But I just started learning Bash scripting this month so...yeah so not very good yet.
I am attempting to itterate through a file that has multiple lines and for each one read the entire line and use the value then to search in other files. The problem is that instead of an entire line I am getting each word in the file set as the value I am searching for. For example in File 1... (2 Replies)

MAILER(8) System Manager's Manual MAILER(8)NAME
mailer - script to warn users about their weak passwords
SYNOPSIS
mailer password-files
DESCRIPTION
This manual page documents briefly the mailer command, which is part of the john package. This manual page was written for the Debian
GNU/Linux distribution because the original program does not have a manual page. john, better known as John the Ripper, is a tool to find
weak passwords of users in a server.
The mailer tool is useful to inform users which have been found to be using weak passwords by mail.
You should edit the message mailer will send to the users, but remember to copy the script to a safe place before editing it, as it's gen-
erally a bad idea to modify things living in /usr.
SEE ALSO john(8), unafs(8), unique(8), unshadow(8).
The programs are documented fully by John's documentation, which should be available in /usr/share/doc/john or other location, depending on
your system.
