IMO, if the OP really have such numbers he should just normalize them. And there is no need to undecorate them back.
(It is "useful use" of cat).
Or with awk if there are several numbers on lines:
Use 2 or 8 for bytes and 32-bit words.

OPTIONS -b Skip leading blanks when making comparisons
-c Check to see if a file is sorted
-d Dictionary order: ignore punctuation
-f Fold upper case onto lower case
-i Ignore nonASCII characters
-m Merge presorted files
-n Numeric sort order
-o Next argument is output file
-r Reverse the sort order
