Starting out, Linux Distribution
Hi,
i'm currently part of an apprenticeship becoming a IT specialist.
Because I'm already an electronic technician (finished apprenticeship) I can do this one in 2 years (normally you need 3).
Thing is, in school they started out with basic unix stuff (working with the shell) in the first year. Now I need to learn all that stuff until my school starts in september.
I'm already on my way using a virtual machine one of my teachers made (SUN Linux) with all the data I need to finish working through the script I got.
I also have a virtual Damn Small Linux.
I like working with unix systems, I currently have Ubuntu installed on my computer, but for some reason I'm not that fond of it anymore, I want to try something else.
Now I want to hear what to experts say
I've been browsing these forums for some time and I must say that it is very interesting and you guys really know what you talk about.
So:
1. What Linux Distribution do you think is the best and why is that so?
Which Linux do you use and why?
2. Is there a IRC channel or some chat connected to this forum?
I hope you can give me some useful infos here, maybe I can finally kill all of my windows pcs

I m working on many Linux servers in my project. But i am unable to know which Linux Distribution i am using Like whether i am using SUSE or REDHAT or MONDRAKE. I tried with "uname" command. But it does not help me. Please provide me the command if u know.

I really like to use linux, although I freely admit I don't know squat about it. I can install it, update it and get it to most of what I would like it to do, up to running some windows apps on it.

I want to learn Linux.
But i cant understand where should i start from and which book to refer to.

What was the first Linux distribution you tried?
My first was Knoppix, it was pretty good I thought, and it supported my old hardware http://www.linuxforum.com/images/smilies/smile.png Too bad I couldn't figure out how to install it at the time though.

How to grep a line not starting with # from a file (there are two lines starting with # and normal)?
e.g.
File name: File.txt
cat File.txt
Result:
#INBOUND_QUEUE=FAQ1
INBOUND_QUEUE=FAQ2
I want to get the value for one which is not commented out.

safe_finger - finger client wrapper that protects against nasty stuff from finger servers SYNOPSIS
safe_finger [finger_options] DESCRIPTION
The safe_finger command protects against nasty stuff from finger servers. Use this program for automatic reverse finger probes from the tcp_wrapper (tcpd) , not the raw finger command. The safe_finger command makes sure that the finger client is not run with root privileges. It also runs the finger client with a defined PATH environment. safe_finger will also protect you from problems caused by the output of some finger servers. The problem: some programs may react to stuff in the first column. Other programs may get upset by thrash anywhere on a line. File systems may fill up as the finger server keeps sending data. Text editors may bomb out on extremely long lines. The finger server may take forever because it is somehow wedged. safe_finger takes care of all this badness. SEE ALSO
