Not able to login as normal users through console /telnet/ssh

I somehow modified the system so that no one can telnet or ssh into this box as any user including root. I might have blown away important files, I don't know. When ssh'ing into certain Unix boxes I'm seeing two errors that appear immediately after entering the password I've never seen. After the error message is displayed the connection closes immediately. sftp-server implements the server side of the SSH File Transfer Protocol as defined in the IETF draft-ietf-secsh-filexfer. sftp-server is a subsystem for sshd(1M) and must not be run directly. There are no options or config settings.
