I've determined that it is in fact 128K on the old SCO server, so presumably that's what the tape has backed up as.
On the Ubuntu side, I tried the following variations of setting the block size to 128k, followed by trying to read with tar (had to install mt-st to get the 'setblk' thing working with mt):
(variable mode I think)
(128k * 1024 to get byte value)
..but tar -tvf still threw the same error.
I also tried the following tar statement to try read it with 128k block size:
but same error.
Should I set the blocksize on the SCO side to something else then? And if so what should I set it to?
For those with backup tapes (and I just bought and installed a Seagate one for my FreeBSD box) I want to know how to get the most out of each tape by placing multiple backups on each tape (potentially 20GB). Please correct me if I'm wrong:

Currently am running the backup command for AIX 5L and see that the tape is rewinding after the completion of the back.
backup -0 -u -f /dev/rmt0 / >> $file 2>&1
What can I do to stop allow the backup to rew after the completion of this job? Any thoughts?

DESCRIPTION
The "Locale::Codes::LangVar" module provides access to standard codes used for identifying language variations, such as those as defined in
the IANA language registry.
Most of the routines take an optional additional argument which specifies the code set to use. If not specified, the default IANA language
registry codes will be used.
SUPPORTED CODE SETS
There are several different code sets you can use for identifying language variations. A code set may be specified using either a name, or
a constant that is automatically exported by this module.
For example, the two are equivalent:
$lvar = code2langvar('en','alpha-2');
$lvar = code2langvar('en',LOCALE_CODE_ALPHA_2);
The codesets currently supported are:
alpha
This is the set of alphanumeric codes from the IANA language registry, such as 'arevela' for Eastern Armenian.
This code set is identified with the symbol "LOCALE_LANGVAR_ALPHA".
This is the default code set.
