Purpose of "read" and "$END$" in ksh ?

Purpose of "read" and "$END$" in ksh ?
Hi,
Could anyone please shed some light on the following script lines and what is it doing as it was written by an ex-administrator?
cat $AMS/version|read a b verno d
DBVer=$(/usr/bin/printf "%7s" $verno)
I checked that the cat $AMS/version command returns following output:
Application Release 12.2L01 as of Fri Nov 2 22:11:46 EDT 2007
But when it is being piped through read in the above lines, nothing is available in DBVer parameter when I output using echo $DBVer.
Also what is the purpose of $END$ as in the following code:
$AMS/bin/procmon testdb << $END$

Hi,
I have small script written in korn shell. When it is called from different script, its dumping core, but no core dump when we run it standalone.
And its not dumping core if we run the script using "/bin/sh" instead of "ksh"
Can some body please help me how to resolve this issue.

i need a Prompting read in my script:

But i always get this Error:
-p: is not an identifier
When I run these in c-shell i get this error
/usr/bin/read: read: bad option(s)

My expected output for line in the file must be :

The shells file contains a list of the shells on the system. Applications use this file to determine whether a shell is valid. See getuser- shell(3C). For each shell a single line should be present, consisting of the shell's path, relative to root. A hash mark (#) indicates the beginning of a comment; subsequent characters up to the end of the line are not interpreted by the routines which search the file. Blank lines are also ignored. The following default shells are used by utilities: /bin/bash, /bin/csh, /bin/jsh, /bin/ksh, /bin/ksh93, /bin/pfcsh, /bin/pfksh, /bin/pfsh, /bin/sh, /bin/tcsh, /bin/zsh, /sbin/jsh, /sbin/sh, /usr/bin/bash, /usr/bin/csh, /usr/bin/jsh, /usr/bin/ksh, /usr/bin/ksh93, /usr/bin/pfcsh, /usr/bin/pfksh, /usr/bin/pfsh, and /usr/bin/sh, /usr/bin/tcsh, /usr/bin/zsh, and /usr/sfw/bin/zsh. /etc/shells overrides the default list.
