Not sure I would agree with ease of ip address management. After all depending on how large the network is using dhcp to staticly assign ip addresses could be a very large task and if you are going to use static that way why not remove DHCP ahs assign everything it's own ip address.. I would say it is used for devices that need to have a staic ip address on a HDCP network. For example a printer or server or IDS system. Usually on a dhcp network you are only going to have a hand full of staticly assigned addresses.

I have a USB Wireless Adapter using the rum0 driver. All I want to do is set a perminent static IP for the onboard wired interface elxl0. I am trying to write a set of scripts for my Ubuntu 810 Server to allow a user to change from DHCP to a user-supplied Static IP, Subnet, Gateway and DNS Servers.
So far I have the following, where $USERCHOICE is a user-entered value in each case:

We have 2 solaris 10 t5240 servers with static IP addresses on nxge0 I/F which were rebooted a few days back with a known good config that has been in place for years (for /etc/hosts, /etc/hostname.nxge0, /etc/netmasks, etc)

dhcpmgr is a graphical user interface which enables you to manage the Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) service on the local sys-

USAGE
You can perform the following tasks using dhcpmgr:
Configure DHCP service
Use dhcpmgr to configure the DHCP daemon as a DHCP server, and select the data store to use for storing network configuration tables..
Configure BOOTP relay service
Use dhcpmgr to configure the DHCP daemon as a BOOTP relay.
Manage DHCP or BOOTP relay service
Use dhcpmgr to start, stop, enable, disable or unconfigure the DHCP service or BOOTP relay service, or change DHCP server parameters.
Manage DHCP addresses
Use dhcpmgr to add, modify, or delete IP addresses leased by the DHCP service.
Manage DHCP macros
Use dhcpmgr to add, modify or delete macros used to supply configuration parameters to DHCP clients.
Manage DHCP options
Use dhcpmgr to add, modify or delete options used to define parameters deliverable through DHCP.
Convert to a new DHCP data store
