Your variable "degrees" is undefined and for awk it is equivalent 0. So sin(-30*0) = sin(0) = 0. What is really strange why it is equal -0.

Return Values
All the double functions return NaN if NaN is passed in.
If |x| > 1 then (x) and (x) will return the default quiet NaN.
The function defines (0,0) = NaN.
