Replacing variable Text between fixed strings
Hello all,
This is my first post and I hope you can help me out.
I searched for quite some hours now and haven't found a simple solution to my problem.
It is as following:
I got this file:
dl.dropbox.com/u/14586156/stuff/Bookmarks.plist
and want to replace the Text between "file://localhost/ and /Documents/ with whatever. (Not literaly whatever, just any other text).
( in BASH/SHELL)
Since this is not a normal sorted text file and instead a plist it seems a quite
task to do.
I guess sed and gawk should be able to do this, yet neither of the solution provided anywhere helped me to accomplish this
I really hope anyone could help me with this since it is driving me crazy.

BTW: if there is a solution: Can these replacements also be limited to the ocurrences (e.g. only replace the first, second or maybe third occurence ?
Also: Is there any plist parsing utility for shell or awk that can write the parsed result to a new file in easily readable format ?

I am trying to take the two line version of this:
mv myFile.txt myFile.txt.bak
sed 's/foo/bar/g' myFile.txt.bak > myFile.txt

Can anyone help with a effective solution ?
I need to change a variable length text field (between 1 - 18 characters) to a fixed length text of 18 characters with the unused portion, at the end, filled with spaces.

The code below gives the string "test1.txt" even though "tessdsdt" does not match "test1.txt". I would like to return "" if there is no match and return some kind of error that I can capture and decide what to do.

hotswaprc - configuration file for hotswap DESCRIPTION
/etc/hotswaprc is the global configuration file for the hotswap utility. It allows system administrators to specify arbitrary shell scripts to be run after a device is inserted, as well as before and after it is removed. Scripts are selected according to the model name retrieved from the device. This is particularly helpful for automatic configura- tion of CD-RW drives, which require SCSI emulation and bypass normal access via the IDE subsystem. hotswaprc is implemented as an Extensible Mark-up Language (XML) application. XML documents are structured using elements of the form <tag-name> content <tag-name>. A Document Type Definition (DTD) describes the possible content of each element. Please refer to the XML specification for more information. The hotswap distribution also contains an example file, doc/hotswaprc.example, which includes the DTD for the configuration file format. <hotswap> This is the root element of the document. Each valid hotswaprc must contain exactly one <hotswap> element. The <hotswap> element may contain an arbitrary number of <device> elements. <device> The configuration file contains one <device> element for every device for which scripts are defined. The <device> element is com- posed of the following elements in this order: <name>, <post-insert>, <pre-remove>, <post-remove>. All but <name> are optional. <name> The content of this element is the model identification string of the IDE device the current <device> element refers to. <post-insert> Contains the shell script that is to be executed after the device has been inserted and registered with the kernel. <pre-remove> Contains the shell script that is to be run before hotswap attempts to unregister the device. <post-remove> Contains the shell script that is to be run after the device had been unregistered.
