Why not use rsync to do your backup ? and you can compress it in a single directory ..

For the database, i use (cd /database; tar cvf file.tar .)
for the Root filesystem, i use (cd /; tar uEvf file.tar .)

shevek::ostring is a C++ version of printf.
It uses templates to allow expanding it to user-defined types, but it still uses a format string to make it better translatable. ostring
