Hi.

Observations on 32-bit and 64-bit:

I have run native 32-bit OSs on a (Dell) IBM Xeon server ("EM64T"), and on a (custom) AMD Athlon-64 workstation. However, both boxes are now running 64-bit Debian.

The Xeon box is also a server for virtual machines, running VMWare Server 2. If you have the appropriate hardware-assisted features for virtual, you can use 32-bit and 64-bit OSs as virtual machines.

However, the Xeon that I use is old, so I can run only 32-bit virtual machines. I did try installing BeOS, but I didn't get very far. I seem to recall that I needed to have a real or virtual floppy to start the process. I see I have "haiku-r1alpha2.iso" in my inventory, but apparently I have not yet done anything with it.

Additionally, I have compiled c++ and Fortran in 32-bit mode on the AMD, and, with the appropriate libraries, these codes run correctly as well.

NAME

       perlhaiku - Perl version 5.10+ on Haiku

DESCRIPTION

       This file contains instructions how to build Perl for Haiku and lists known problems.

BUILD AND INSTALL

       The build procedure is completely standard:

	 ./Configure -de
	 make
	 make install

       Make perl executable and create a symlink for libperl:

	 chmod a+x /boot/common/bin/perl
	 cd /boot/common/lib; ln -s perl5/5.16.3/BePC-haiku/CORE/libperl.so .

       Replace 5.16.3 with your respective version of Perl.

KNOWN PROBLEMS

       The following problems are encountered with Haiku revision 28311:

       o   Perl cannot be compiled with threading support ATM.

       o   The ext/Socket/t/socketpair.t test fails. More precisely: the subtests using datagram sockets fail. Unix datagram sockets aren't
	   implemented in Haiku yet.

       o   A subtest of the ext/Sys/Syslog/t/syslog.t test fails. This is due to Haiku not implementing "/dev/log" support yet.

       o   The tests lib/Net/Ping/t/450_service.t and lib/Net/Ping/t/510_ping_udp.t fail. This is due to bugs in Haiku's network stack
	   implementation.
