sed 's/145.D25.D558/215.22.45.DW/' (the file name)
Let's escape the period characters to stop "sed" interpreting them and give it a global "g" parameter.
Code:
sed "s/145\.D25\.D558/215\.22.45\.DW/g" (the file name)
This is a big guess because you have not mentioned what Operating System and Shell you have or provided sample input and expected output. Phrases like "but it did not work.. " need qualification with a visual description of what you expected and what actually happened accompanied by any error messages presented exactly as they appear.
Vague statements like "a very big file" are worthless. Exactly to the byte how big is this file?

Is there a way to use the sed command to
1) search a specified pattern
2) in the line where that pattern is found, replace from character N to character N+4 with a new 4-character string.
Thks in advance! (5 Replies)
Hello,
I am hoping someone can provide some guidance on using context based search and replace to search for a pattern and then do a search and replace in the line that follows it. For example, I have a file that looks like this:

Basically , i search for a string ( from variable) in a input file , if line found then search a string called "STRING" and replace with text (from another variable ). I cant avoid # delimiter due to esc sequences.

REPLACE="TEXT/TO/REPLACE"

curl_global_init_mem
curl_global_init_mem(3) libcurl Manual curl_global_init_mem(3)NAME
curl_global_init_mem - Global libcurl initialisation with memory callbacks
SYNOPSIS
#include <curl/curl.h>
CURLcode curl_global_init_mem(long flags,
curl_malloc_callback m,
curl_free_callback f,
curl_realloc_callback r,
curl_strdup_callback s,
curl_calloc_callback c );
DESCRIPTION
This function works exactly as curl_global_init(3) with one addition: it allows the application to set callbacks to replace the otherwise
used internal memory functions.
This man page only adds documentation for the callbacks, see the curl_global_init(3) man page for all the rest. When you use this function,
all callback arguments must be set to valid function pointers.
The prototypes for the given callbacks should match these:
void *malloc_callback(size_t size);
To replace malloc()
void free_callback(void *ptr);
To replace free()
void *realloc_callback(void *ptr, size_t size);
To replace realloc()
char *strdup_callback(const char *str);
To replace strdup()
void *calloc_callback(size_t nmemb, size_t size);
To replace calloc()
CAUTION
Manipulating these gives considerable powers to the application to severly screw things up for libcurl. Take care!
