I wanted to extract the month number from unix.
unixdev(invent) /home/odsapp/apps/CTSI
==> date
Tue Nov 11 14:42:27 EST 2008
From date command, i can get day(11), year(2008). But i need month number..
I am receiving files as test11102008.txt

I have a file with the following entries:

Is there a awk or sed command which would allow me to extract only the numbers from this file as output, so the output would look like this:

2618

I've using HPUX B.11.23 U ia64 with shell = sh.
I've been having some problem get the highest number of this script.

zgrep
ZGREP(1) General Commands Manual ZGREP(1) NAME
zgrep - search possibly compressed files for a regular expression SYNOPSIS
zgrep [ grep_options ] [ -e ] pattern filename... DESCRIPTION
Zgrep invokes grep on compressed or gzipped files. These grep options will cause zgrep to terminate with an error code: (-[drRzZ]|--di*|--exc*|--inc*|--rec*|--nu*). All other options specified are passed directly to grep. If no file is specified, then the standard input is decompressed if necessary and fed to grep. Otherwise the given files are uncompressed if necessary and fed to grep. If the GREP environment variable is set, zgrep uses it as the grep program to be invoked. EXIT CODE
