My script doesn't nicely handle the case where the the file already has the proper name. In those cases, mv will complain about target and source being the same file. To prevent that, simply change the for:
As far as a "pure" bash solution, I don't think one exists without writing a big case-Waac to handle lower - upper case conversion. Luckily, cut and tr are standard tools on every system. But it's pretty cool to see how ruby is apt for more than just Web Development.

When I have to rename a file I use "mv filename newfilename".
But what about renaming multiple files, for example if I want to add the prefix "old" to several image files (in fact it's what I wanted to do..).
Thanks in advance.... :D (6 Replies)

DESCRIPTION
Rake is a simple ruby(1) build program with capabilities similar to the regular make(1) command.
Rake has the following features:
o Rakefiles (Rake's version of Makefiles) are completely defined in standard Ruby syntax. No XML files to edit. No quirky Makefile syntax
to worry about (is that a tab or a space?).
o Users can specify tasks with prerequisites.
o Rake supports rule patterns to synthesize implicit tasks.
o Flexible FileLists that act like arrays but know about manipulating file names and paths.
o A library of prepackaged tasks to make building rakefiles easier.
