Thanks, aixcraft. When I posted that message, I did have a working AIX installation, but it was short-lived. After I installed the updates from the two update CDs, the system wouldn't boot anymore (lockup while starting NFS services). I tried reinstalling several more times, with all possible permutations. Usually it would boot up to the login prompt at least once after the initial install, but subsequent boots would lock up, usually at the same place, but not always. I did get it working in 32-bit, but the DVD-ROM drive wasn't recognized and there were weird problems with the network. I smelled driver problems, or possibly a HW problem, or maybe the installation media I have are for a different machine?
Anyway, I "solved" the problem by giving up on AIX and installing CRUX PPC instead. What a difference that makes! Now the p275 runs the way it should: fast and stable, in 64 bits. Still, I wish I could run AIX as well, but alas this does not seem possible.

More issues. The "|" key doesn't work at all, either in the text terminal or in mwm (which starts fine when I do "startx").
