Using a Gnu/Linux based distribution would definitely be a better approach to recover ext3 data. I cannot tell if ubuntu would be a good choice or not for this software raid support. You might have better luck in a Linux focused forum.

Hi,
I am running Suse on a fujitsu server. The problem is that it will no fully load the usb external disk. When plugged in, dmesg shows that indeed a usb disk has been plugged in ,but gives no devpath e.g sda,sdb.
lsusb shows the disk vendor (western digital) but nothing else.Whats goin on... (2 Replies)

fs_spec
block special device or remote filesystem to be mounted. Mandatory. Type uniline.
fs_file
mount point for the filesystem. Mandatory. Type uniline.
fs_vfstype
file system type. Mandatory. Type enum. choice: 'auto', 'davfs', 'ext2', 'ext3', 'ext4', 'swap', 'proc', 'iso9660', 'vfat', 'usbfs',

Here are some explanations on the possible values:
'auto'
file system type is probed by the kernel when mounting the device
