If you don't source the script then the script would be executed in a different shell (sub shell) which has nothing to do with the parent shell. therefore the environment you change in the script is exists only within the script execution phase.

add this line in the script and check

echo 'echo $LD_LIBRARY_PATH' >> test.sh


I would request to explain what you are trying to do. Do you need to update the library path for some script or just want to update in your current (or may be all ) terminal?

script [-a] [filename] DESCRIPTION
The script utility makes a record of everything printed on your screen. The record is written to filename. If no file name is given, the record is saved in the file typescript. See WARNINGS. The script command forks and creates a sub-shell, according to the value of $SHELL, and records the text from this session. The script ends when the forked shell exits or when Control-d is typed.
