http://storusint.com/pdf/SCSI_vs_FC.pdf seems very helpful!
I have not surveyed the FC offerings for small servers, PCs, Laptops. While it might be SAN oriented, I see they are available in popular form factors:
FC hard drive price compare - Google Search
Seems a bit faster than the hottest SCSI, and maybe with simpler/cheaper controller, cabling, termination. Controller comes as a plug in or motherboard.
Since it fits into the SCSI configuration metaphor, it is not surprising that it inherits many configuration attributes from SCSI.
I wonder if FC has more latency and lower random performance than SCSI, with the serial access and optical encoding/decoding, not to mention higher contention if many/more devices are on a channel.

I would like to know if I can move the disks from a V240 chassis into a V440 chassis to use the increased resources (CPU & Memory) to boost performance. I know you can move disks between V210/240 chassis's, but I'm not sure if this would work between 240s & 440s. Any help would be much appreciated. (4 Replies)

AHB(4) BSD Kernel Interfaces Manual AHB(4)
NAME
ahb -- Adaptec EISA SCSI host adapter driver
SYNOPSIS
To compile this driver into the kernel, place the following lines in your kernel configuration file:
device scbus
device ahb
Alternatively, to load the driver as a module at boot time, place the following line in loader.conf(5):
ahb_load="YES"
DESCRIPTION
This driver provides access to the SCSI bus connected to an Adaptec AHA-174X host adapters in ``enhanced'' mode. Tagged queueing and syn-
chronous SCSI transfers are supported.
HARDWARE
The ahb driver supports the following SCSI host adapters:
o Adaptec AHA-1740
o Adaptec AHA-1742
o Adaptec AHA-1740A
o Adaptec AHA-1742A
CAVEATS
The Adaptec 174X is very sensitive to SCSI bus termination and cable length. It may also have difficulties operating with some modern
devices that, due to their speed, expose timing problems in the controller. There are no known mechanisms for working around device incom-
patibilities of this nature.
