Almost but it errors because it tries to append the "AAA" to the beginning of the entire directory. AAA/home/vedder191/AAA_revised cannot rename

In sftp script to get files, I have to rename all the files which I am picking. Rename command does not work here. Is there any way to do this?
I am using #!/bin/ksh

SYNOPSIS
bool rename (string $oldname, string $newname, [resource $context])
DESCRIPTION
Attempts to rename $oldname to $newname, moving it between directories if necessary. If $newname exists, it will be overwritten.
