The best starting point would be something that you have personal interest in. If you want to do kernel development, check the
Kernel.org Bugzilla Site and the
LKML for open bugs that seem interesting and solvable. Same goes for any other FLOSS project.
If you'd noticed earlier that you still don't have a project, you might have gotten into the
GSOC 2010, but that's already well underway.
