it appears that you want a command substitution in the for loop list of items:
This is not the right way to do such a thing though, if any of the file names found contains white spaces or other pathological characters your script will fail.
This should be better implemented with a while loop, modifying the current IFS.
I am using the command below to sort unique a file and I keep getting this error that sort can't stat.
Error:
sort: can't stat /xxxx/xxxxx/2005/xxxxxx/out_20050602155231/test.txt: No such file or directory
Does anybody have an idea when this error could occur.

DESCRIPTION
Asks the lircd daemon to send one or more CIR (Consumer Infra-Red) commands. This is intended for remote control of electronic devices such
as TV boxes, HiFi sets, etc.
DIRECTIVE can be:
SEND_ONCE - send CODE [CODE ...] once
SEND_START - start repeating CODE
SEND_STOP - stop repeating CODE
LIST - list configured remote items
SET_TRANSMITTERS - set transmitters NUM [NUM ...]
SIMULATE - simulate IR event
REMOTE is the name of a remote, as described in the lircd configuration file.
CODE is the name of a remote control key of REMOTE, as it appears in the lircd configuration file.
NUM is the transmitter number of the hardware device.
For the LIST DIRECTIVE, REMOTE and/or CODE can be empty:
