I'm just learning UNIX and I'm trying to do the following:
Write a script called details.bash that, for each file in the working directory, prints the filename, the # of lines, and the # of words to to some output file, like this:
filename1 73 431
filename2 5 21

I want to display the result in the following manner.

I would like to display the last 8 characters of the filenames for filenames of different lengths.
I can delete the last 8 characters with sed but dont know how to only show the last 8 characters.
The filenames are something like;
afxH340800340000
afxH30800340021
afxR3080034002122

I do alot of testing and have hundreds of log files output. I have a script (someone else wrote) which finds all the passed and failed logs and puts a number in a column onto a webpage:

Ok, this may seem like a simple request at first. I have a directory that contains sets of files with a YYYYMMDD component to the name, along with other files of different filespecs. something like this:

I know the right syntax for displaying the current date is $(date). However, I am planning to send emails to some customers which displays their subscription date, and then the expiry. The expiry being 30 days from the current date.

Working in a Bourne shell. What command would list the filename and size of a file if the size of the file had to be bigger than $a and smaller than $b?
Output (if $a is 10 bytes and $b is 50 bytes):test1.txt 15
test2.txt 30
test3.txt 50

backup_help - Displays help for backup commands SYNOPSIS
backup help [-topic <help string>+] [-admin] [-help] backup h [-t <help string>+] [-a] [-h] DESCRIPTION
The backup help command displays the complete online help entry (short description and syntax statement) for each operation code specified by the -topic argument. If the -topic argument is omitted, the output includes the first line (name and short description) of the online help entry for every backup command. To list every backup command whose name or short description includes a specified keyword, use the backup apropos command. OPTIONS
-topic <help string>+ Indicates each command for which to display the complete online help entry. Omit the backup part of the command name, providing only the operation code (for example, specify dump, not backup dump). If this argument is omitted, the output briefly describes every backup command. -help Prints the online help for this command. All other valid options are ignored. OUTPUT
The online help entry for each backup command consists of the following two or three lines: o The first line names the command and briefly describes its function. o The second line lists aliases for the command, if any. o The final line, which begins with the string "Usage", lists the command's options in the prescribed order. Online help entries use the same symbols (for example, brackets) as the reference pages in this document. EXAMPLES
