I have two files , one file with data file with attributes that need to be sent to another file to generate a predefined format.
Example:

Can anyone tell me why does'nt the following command work?
find /gfp1/home/arijit -name "*.sas7bdat" | gzip
I am trying to compress all files with extension sas7bdat with gzip.
It gives error message
gzip: compressed data not written to a terminal. Use -f to force compression.... (5 Replies)

Hi All,
I have a random test file: test.txt, size: 146
$ ll test.txt
$ 146 test.txt
Take 1:
$ cat test.txt | gzip > test.txt.gz
$ ll test.txt.gz
$ 124 test.txt.gz
Take 2:
$ gzip test.txt
$ ll test.txt.gz
$ 133 test.txt.gz
As you can see, gzipping a file and piping into gzip... (1 Reply)

I would like to make a listing of files in a large directory and output it to tar.gz. Is it possible to do this in one command?
For example;
I would like the text output from this command to be outputted to a directory.tar.gz file.
ls -al -R /bigdir

md5sum - compute and check MD5 message digest SYNOPSIS
md5sum [OPTION]... [FILE]... DESCRIPTION
Print or check MD5 (128-bit) checksums. With no FILE, or when FILE is -, read standard input. -b, --binary read in binary mode -c, --check read MD5 sums from the FILEs and check them -t, --text read in text mode (default) The following three options are useful only when verifying checksums: --quiet don't print OK for each successfully verified file --status don't output anything, status code shows success -w, --warn warn about improperly formatted checksum lines --help display this help and exit --version output version information and exit The sums are computed as described in RFC 1321. When checking, the input should be a former output of this program. The default mode is to print a line with checksum, a character indicating type (`*' for binary, ` ' for text), and name for each FILE. AUTHOR
