A couple of options (neither fantastic, I imagine!)

Code:
$ echo $X
/dir1/dir2/dir3/dir4/dir5/dir6

$ echo $X | sed "s|[^/]*/[^/]*/[^/]*/||"
dir3/dir4/dir5/dir6

$ echo $X | cut -d/ -f4-
dir3/dir4/dir5/dir6
