Try renaming authorized_keys to authorized_keys2. Most recent Unix flavors prefer protocol 2.
Note: Newer OpenSSH version accept both names for protocol 1 and 2.
Also, make sure that .ssh folder has permissions 0700, and authorized_keys 0644.
