I would go for a shell array:

bash:

Code:

$> IFS="-"
$> A=( `echo this-is-the-case` )
$> echo ${A[2]}
the

ksh:

Code:

$> IFS="-"
$> set -A A `echo this-is-the-case`
$> echo ${A[3]}
case

So you can address any element of the array directly and don't really need awk.
