Yes man mail says where your mailbox is located but not where .forward has to be located. From your first description it seemed like you have placed .forward to /var/spool/mail since you wrote that you placed it where your mailbox is located.
Anyway, does it work now or not?

       /usr/ucb/from [-s sender] [username]

DESCRIPTION

       The  from utility prints out the mail header lines in your mailbox file to show you who your mail is from. If  username is specified, user-
       name's mailbox is examined instead of your own.

       -s sender    Only display headers for mail sent by  sender.
