[SOLVED] why does .gitignore ignores Makefile???
Hello!
It's the third time I download source code using git (only method available), to find out later that the most essential files to compile are missing and listed in .gitignore.
Examples:
phonon-backend-vlc which misses Makefile
git.videolan.org Git - vlc/bindings/phonon.git/summary
and gnome3 icon theme, which misses the necessary files to build index.theme (forgot link)
Why is that done and what should I do? phonon-backend-vlc has been published in many sites, so it's not something the developer wouldn't want you to download.
Thanks in advance for your attention!

-w <filename>
Writes the commit-id into the filename under $GIT_DIR/refs/<filename> on the local end after the transfer is complete.

Instead of a commit id on the command line (which is not expected in this case), git http-fetch expects lines on stdin in the format
<commit-id>[' '<filename-as-in--w>]
--recover
Verify that everything reachable from target is fetched. Used after an earlier fetch is interrupted.
